One of the key geopolitical platform of the year, bringing together politicians, senators, defense ministers, and military leaders from leading democracies. This year, the forum was held in Canada and served as an important international platform to discuss security challenges arising from Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Lesia Orobets had the honor to join the panel discussion “Democracies Decide Destiny,” where she discussed strategic decisions for protecting the world alongside:
- Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, Chair of the NATO Military Committee (Italy)
- General Seán Clancy, Chair of the EU Military Committee
- Dr. Tamara Cofman Wittes, President of the National Democratic Institute (USA)
The discussion was moderated by Damon Wilson, President and CEO of the National Endowment for Democracy (USA).
The participants discussed key challenges, including sanctions policy against Russia, NATO’s role in ensuring European security, the need to implement a reparations credit for Ukraine, and the protection of Ukrainian and European airspace through the #SkyShield initiative. They also addressed the recently proposed so-called “peace plan” by the United States.
“If Russians are actually negotiating for real, they would be okay to start with a ceasefire and things like Sky Shield over the sky to make sure that no incident willingly or unwillingly breaks it.
There are many things in those items of the peace plan which is neither about the peace nor looks like a plan for capping Ukrainian army which is obviously the only army in Europe which stands between Russian friendly intentions and European countries.
And if you would ask why, the most obvious reason is that you wouldn’t be able to help Ukrainians. But think deeper — it’s because neither Russians nor Chinese want you to have Ukrainians as allies when there will be hostilities on your territory.”Lesia Orobets
